Momo Kyun Sword is one of those anime series that, when people ask you about anime, you don’t show them. It’s not that the series isn’t bad, it’s that it is just so outlandish and overtly perverted that you feel really weird sharing it with them.
I’ll be honest. I don’t really follow much anime other than the very select few that I have watched. And when I select a series or mini-series to feature here on ANIME SPOTLIGHT I pick one at random and start watching. To be really honest, I take the series at face value when I choose one. I look at the promotional image for the series, read the quick synopsis and then I’m off.
Momo Kyun Sword is what people call a “fan service” series. The show is very light on depth and has a lot of … ahem … assets.
The series centres around Momoko, a beautiful young sword fighter who was born inside a peach (momo in Japanese). She lives with her constant companions—the dog god Inugami, the monkey god Sarugami, and the pheasant god Kijigami—in a peaceful paradise. However, a demon army led by devil king invades the paradise and steals the precious treasure that protects Momoko’s land. She is enlisted to help the Celestial Maidens to retrieve the treasure and save the people, Momoko embarks on a great adventure with her three companions.
This series lasted just 12 episodes and ran in Japan from July to September 2014.
Like I eluded to earlier, Momo Kyun Sword isn’t the sort of anime that you should use to introduce your friends or family to anime. Sure they’ll all know about anime from the Sailor Moons or Pokémons of the world, but this isn’t the series to give them a deep dive into the world. Momo Kyun Sword is definitely aimed at more mature audiences and has some partial nudity and a lot of jiggling. The series is obviously aimed squarely at the male audience with many of the characters, including the main character Momoko, sporting large breasts and plenty of cleavage.
Heck, the fourth episode sees the two sides calling a truce and spending the day at the beach. I kid you not.
Despite the unusual premise and the rather over the top boobage in the series, the show itself isn’t half bad. The series is fun to watch and an enjoyable experience. It’t just not one that you might feel comfortable watching in mixed company or you may get some strange looks.
The show has been licensed by Sentai Filmworks and will actually see a DVD and BluRay release later this month. The disc is a bit pricey, but you can watch the series on Crunchyroll as well. But don’t forget that Cruncyroll is changing their subscription system so this series will be restricted to premium members only after February 1st.
If you’re not a premium member and are looking to see more of this series you should head over there now!
