Next up in our anime spotlight we decided to go in another direction again. It’s always interesting to play around with different genres and see what’s outt here. Get out of your comfort zone a little bit.
So I’ve chosen Golden Time, a romance comedy series which also has a little bit of a supernatural element. But what anime doesn’t?
The series follows Banri Tada, a newly admitted student at a private law school in Tokyo. We quickly befriends Mitsuo Yanagisawa who has come to attend the law school to get away from his childhood friend, and highschool girlfriend, Koko Kaga. However that doesn’t last long as she follows him to the school to be with him. Koko Kaga is the epitome of a spoiled rich girl who always wants her way and won’t take the hints from Mitsuo that he wants her to leave her alone, even though some of these hints are more like straightforward statements. But for as much as Koko Kaga is obsessive, possessive and very blunt with other people, she does have a softer side which is revealed later.
Due an accident at the end of high school, Banri Tada lost all of his memories. He has gone to Tokyo with a clean slate, though he often wonders about his past. He has gotten close a few times to remembering, but every time he is near remembering he loses it again. Things also get confusing at his new school when one of the new friends he makes turns out to be someone he knew from high school. He discovers a photo of this person when he returns home to his parents and then begins to wonder why they haven’t said anything.
And there is another twist. Though Banri Tada has lost his memories, those memories are following him in a ghostly like version of himself. This ghost reflects on who he was and wonders what will happen to Banri if he does get his memories back. He will then cease to be the person he has become since losing said memories.
This series is very fun to watch and funny at times. The interactions between Mitsuo and Koko are funny and sometimes awkward. Especially with Banri there stuck in the middle at times.
Golden Time is also a family friendly title and doesn’t have any language, nudity or mature content.
